Feminization and The New Political Economy of MigrationWomen and Child Migrants in the Context of Political Life, Migration Policies, and Institutional Structures
Migration is one of those subjects that appears simple only from a distance. People move, states regulate borders, labour markets absorb newcomers, families adapt, and political institutions respond. Yet the closer one looks, the less satisfactory these separate descriptions become. A labour market cannot be understood apart from the visa that admits a worker; a visa cannot be understood apart from the institution that administers it; the institution cannot be understood apart from the political conflict surrounding migration; and none of these can be understood adequately if the family, care work, and the gendered distribution of social reproduction are treated as secondary matters. This book was written from the conviction that these connections are not peripheral. They are the subject itself.
